China-Brazil Green Cooperation Enhances Renewable Energy Access in Brazil

On November 18, 2024, a report from People’s Daily highlighted the significant achievements of Sino-Brazilian cooperation in clean energy. The Panati photovoltaic power station, situated in Brazil’s Ceara state, comprises 446,000 solar panels and covers 840 hectares. Funded and constructed by the Brazilian division of China State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), this facility became operational in June 2024, providing renewable energy to over 350,000 households annually. The knowledge-sharing and partnership between Brazil and China have intensified in recent years, particularly regarding the green energy transition. Notably, the State Grid Corporation of China’s construction and operationalization of the Belo Monte ultra-high-voltage transmission project—phases one and two—occurred in 2017 and 2019. This project facilitates the transport of hydroelectric power from Brazil’s northern regions to the heavily populated southeast. Furthermore, the State Grid Corporation secured a new project in December 2023 to direct current transmission, which will channel clean energy sources, including wind and solar, from Brazil’s northeast to the capital Brasilia and surrounding regions. Brazilian scholar Felipe Camargo Gaiotto remarked that Brazil’s expertise in hydropower development, combined with China’s leadership in solar and wind energy production, may lead to considerable advances in sustainable development on a global scale. Transportation advancements, particularly in green transport, are also emerging, with increasing numbers of electric buses and vehicles from Chinese manufacturers being adopted in Brazilian cities such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Data from the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association indicates that over 120,000 light electric vehicles were sold in Brazil within the initial nine months of 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of 113%. Remarkably, eight of the ten best-selling models were produced by Chinese companies. Additionally, BYD, a prominent Chinese new energy vehicle manufacturer, has established a battery production facility in Manaus, Brazil. Since commencing operations in 2020, this assembly base specializes in lithium iron phosphate battery products, featuring a designed capacity for producing battery modules for up to 1,000 electric buses annually. This facility enhances Brazil’s capacity for local battery production, promoting the adoption of green technologies and bolstering public transportation electrification while fostering the advancement of novel energy technologies in the region.
