Hassan and Tebogo Crowned World Athletes of the Year at World Athletics Awards

The World Athletics Awards recognized Sifan Hassan and Letsile Tebogo as the World Athletes of the Year in Monaco. Other notable winners included Mondo Duplantis, Tamirat Tola, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, and Yaroslava Mahuchikh, along with USA Track & Field as the National Federation of the Year.

The World Athletics Awards held on Sunday in Monaco celebrated the year’s top athletes, with Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands and Let’s Tebogo from Botswana receiving the prestigious title of World Athletes of the Year. Hassan, known for her exceptional 2020 Tokyo Olympics performances, made a remarkable comeback to secure a bronze in the women’s 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, ultimately clinching gold in the marathon with a stunning finish of 2:22:55. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Tebogo recorded a personal best of 9.86 seconds in the men’s 100 meters and delivered a world-leading 19.46 seconds in the 200 meters at the same event.

Honored alongside them were several other exceptional athletes including Mondo Duplantis, who earned the Men/Field Athlete of the Year designation for his continued dominance in pole vaulting; Tamirat Tola, who was acknowledged as the Men/Out-of-Stadium Athlete of the Year following his marathon Olympic victory; Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone for her outstanding performance in the women’s 400 meters hurdles; and Yaroslava Mahuchikh, the distinguished Women/Field Athlete of the Year for breaking longstanding records and winning major competitions.

Additionally, USA Track & Field was recognized as the National Federation of the Year for its athletes’ impressive medal haul of 34 medals at the Paris Olympics. This included the honors for its Chief Operating Officer, Renee Washington, as World Athletics Woman of the Year, and the prestigious World Athletics President’s Award awarded to Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike. The evening also recognized Trevor Painter as Coach of the Year for his guidance of Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson.
