Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain highlighted the necessity of seamless connectivity between Bangladesh and China via Myanmar during an international conference in Dhaka. He emphasized the need for stability in Myanmar and the return of Rohingya refugees to facilitate this initiative, which is expected to drive economic growth, reduce poverty, and enhance cultural exchanges. The evolving Bangladesh-China partnership aims to tackle contemporary challenges collectively while fostering regional cooperation.

On December 27, 2024, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain underscored the critical importance of establishing seamless connectivity between Bangladesh and China via Myanmar. During the opening ceremony of the International Conference on ‘China-South Asia Civilization and Connectivity’ at North South University in Dhaka, Hossain emphasized that the most viable route for this connectivity is through Myanmar. He stated, “We need seamless connectivity between Bangladesh and China, and the most viable route passes through Myanmar,” highlighting the mutual benefits this initiative could yield.

Touhid discussed the necessity for a stable Myanmar as essential for creating this connectivity, alongside the sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Rakhine State. He expressed hope for a peaceful resolution, saying, “We hope for the return of a peaceful and stable Myanmar, including the return of the Rohingyas to Rakhine State with rights and security, so that this connectivity can be established to ensure the mutual benefit of our people.”

He further emphasized Bangladesh’s strategic location and economic growth potential, asserting that enhanced connectivity would drive economic development, reduce poverty, and promote cultural exchanges. “This would go a long way in driving economic growth, reducing poverty, and enhancing cultural exchanges,” he stated. The adviser highlighted the increasing importance of regional connectivity in addressing global issues such as climate change and economic instability, advocating for partnership with China.

Touhid acknowledged the significance of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), stating that it aligns with sustainable development and regional integration aspirations, observing that “the development of infrastructure, trade corridors, and people-to-people exchanges under this initiative aligns seamlessly with aspirations for sustainable development and regional integration.”

The evolving partnership between Bangladesh and China, termed a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership’, reflects a foundation built on mutual trust and shared goals for a brighter future. He insisted on a collective approach to tackle contemporary challenges, asserting that “as responsible neighbors, China and South Asian nations must work together to ensure peace, stability, and development in the region.”

Touhid also acknowledged the dynamic spirit within Bangladesh, particularly among the youth, signifying a commitment to creating a more inclusive and innovative society. “This renewed sense of purpose, what we refer to as the spirit of a ‘New Bangladesh,’ is a commitment to building a more inclusive, equitable, and innovative society while redefining our role on the global stage,” he noted. The conference was organized by the China-South Asia Center for Sociocultural Studies of NSU and Yunnan University, China, with participation from key figures including the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, and NSU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury.

In recent years, the need for improved connectivity in South Asia, particularly between Bangladesh and China, has gained increasing attention. Seamless transport links are crucial for enhancing trade, economic growth, and regional integration. The ongoing challenges in Myanmar, particularly the Rohingya crisis, complicate this objective. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) aims to bolster infrastructure development and economic ties, making the establishment of stable connections essential for broader regional cooperation and development.

In conclusion, the establishment of seamless connectivity between Bangladesh and China through Myanmar is pivotal for mutual economic benefits and regional stability. The emphasis on a stable Myanmar and the return of Rohingya refugees underlines the challenges that need addressing to foster this connectivity. The growing partnership reflects a commitment to collective development goals, and regional collaboration is vital in navigating the complexities of current global issues.
