Philippines Reiterates Stance on Chinese Patrol in Disputed Waters
The Philippines has responded strongly to a recent Chinese coastguard patrol near Scarborough Shoal, asserting its maritime claim and considering international legal action. Officials have condemned the Chinese presence, describing it as unacceptable and emphasizing their commitment to contesting such incursions into their exclusive economic zone.
On Tuesday, a significant Chinese coastguard vessel conducted a patrol near the contested Scarborough Shoal, alarming Philippine officials. The ship approached as close as 77 nautical miles to the Philippine shoreline, prompting an urgent response from Manila. In a press briefing, Jonathan Malaya, assistant director general of the National Security Council, labeled the ship’s presence as “unacceptable” and called for its immediate withdrawal. He emphasized the increasing pressures from China, stating, “You’re pushing us to the wall.”
Additionally, Philippine coastguard ships and a surveillance aircraft attempted to compel the Chinese vessel to retreat from the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, which extends 200 nautical miles. Commodore Jay Tarriela highlighted the ongoing efforts to contest the illegal presence of the Chinese coastguard, asserting that it is crucial to demonstrate to the international community that the Philippines will not allow China to normalize its deployment in the region.
