House Republicans Propose Bill to Repurchase Panama Canal Amidst Chinese Control Concerns
House Republicans have introduced the Panama Canal Repurchase Act to facilitate negotiations for the U.S. to reacquire control over the Panama Canal due to concerns regarding Chinese influence. Representative Dusty Johnson emphasized the canal’s importance for American security and commerce, highlighting a substantial percentage of vessels using it. The bill grants the president authority to negotiate with Panama within a defined timeframe.
On Thursday, House Republicans introduced the Panama Canal Repurchase Act, aimed at facilitating the repurchase of the Panama Canal following concerns raised by President-elect Donald Trump regarding possible Chinese control over this vital waterway. The measure, introduced by Representative Dusty Johnson of South Dakota, underscores the strategic significance of the canal for the United States and its economic security as a major transit point for American vessels.
Representative Johnson commented, “President Trump is right to consider repurchasing the Panama Canal. China’s interest in and presence around the canal is a cause for concern. America must project strength abroad – owning and operating the Panama Canal might be an important step towards a stronger America and a more secure globe.” The legislation would empower the President to negotiate with the Panamanian government to reacquire control over the canal, emphasizing the need for America to maintain its influence in the region.
Johnson’s office noted that approximately 72% of the ships transiting through the canal are bound for U.S. ports, highlighting its economic significance. Without access to the canal, vessels would incur additional travel distances of approximately 8,000 miles, which would sharply increase shipping times and costs.
In recent comments, President Trump stated, “The Panama Canal is vital to our country. It is being operated by China. We need it for economic security. The Panama Canal was built for our military.” He reiterated the importance of maintaining American interests within strategic global assets like the canal, which was relinquished to Panama under a treaty negotiated by former President Jimmy Carter in 1999.
Travel to and from the canal also relies on two strategically located ports managed by Hutchison Ports PPC, a Hong-Kong-based company. Concerns regarding China’s expanding influence in the region have been amplified since Panama became a participant in the Belt and Road Initiative in 2018, leading to increased Chinese investments in canal infrastructure.
Should the legislation advance, it would provide a platform for the United States to reclaim and manage the canal, reinstating the nation’s stature in this critical maritime domain.
