Commendation for Nigeria’s Diplomatic Initiatives in West Africa

The Muryar Talaka Awareness Initiative praises the Nigerian government for its diplomatic efforts in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, particularly highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s actions leading to the break of sanctions and promotion of constitutional governance in these countries.

The Muryar Talaka Awareness Initiative has expressed its commendation for the Nigerian federal government’s diplomatic actions concerning Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. In a statement released on Monday, the organization praised President Bola Tinubu for spearheading significant diplomatic dialogues under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). These efforts aimed at engaging with the military governments of these nations were particularly notable.

In December 2024, it was indicated by Alieu Touray, the president of the ECOWAS commission, that Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic announced their intent to withdraw from the regional organization. The group acknowledged President Tinubu’s role in achieving the unconditional lifting of ECOWAS sanctions against these countries and encouraging their leaders to establish a timeline for reinstating constitutional governance.

Furthermore, the organization underscored Nigeria’s benefits from democratic governance since 1999, citing advancements across healthcare, education, infrastructure, and human empowerment. The statement emphasized, “That democracy remains the best form of government as it allows citizens the freedom to vote for the leaders of their choice and have representatives at various levels of government to voice their plights and make laws that will improve their welfare and well-being.”

The statement also reflected on how democracy has furnished Nigerians with fundamental rights, such as freedom of expression, the right to vote, and access to justice, among others. It reiterated how substantial progress has been made in various economic sectors as Nigerians have experienced the dividends of democracy since 1999.

Moreover, the organization condemned the challenges faced during past military regimes, wherein citizens were stripped of basic freedoms and subjected to unjust treatment. In this context, the group publicly commended the Nigerian government and ECOWAS for their persistent diplomatic efforts toward the aforementioned countries.

President Tinubu’s initiative involved multiple high-level delegations, including former heads of state and community leaders, for productive discussions with the military junta. The organization also expressed gratitude for the collaboration of the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Ministry under Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, which continues advocating for the restoration of constitutional rule in these nations.

The statement was co-signed by Zaidu Sabuwa, the group’s president, and Bishir Unguwa, its secretary.

The diplomatic landscape in West Africa, particularly concerning Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, has been marked by military coups and subsequent sanctions by regional organizations like ECOWAS. The withdrawal intentions of these nations from ECOWAS in late 2024 necessitated strong diplomatic interventions. In this context, Nigeria’s engagement, led by President Bola Tinubu, has aimed at fostering dialogue and restoring democracy in these countries, reflecting Nigeria’s broader commitment to regional stability and democratic governance since adopting a democratic framework in 1999.

In summary, the Muryar Talaka Awareness Initiative has recognized the Nigerian government’s diplomatic pursuits in addressing the political upheaval in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The organization applauded President Tinubu for his leadership in championing dialogue and pushing for the removal of sanctions while urging these nations to restore democratic rule. The acknowledgment of democratic dividends underscores the significance of maintaining political stability and fostering human rights in the region.
