China’s Secret Yu-10 Torpedo Unveiled in New Submarine Force Video

The recent video commemorating the 70th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army Navy submarine force has brought attention to the impressive capabilities of China’s secret Yu-10 torpedo. The footage showcased the torpedo’s ability to raise the stern of a target ship out of the water with its explosion shock wave, creating a towering column of water reaching nearly 100 meters in height.

As reported by a Chinese military publication, the Yu-10 torpedo, which has been operational since approximately 2015, has the potential to disable enemy aircraft carriers utilizing China’s conventional submarines. The publication emphasized that even an aircraft carrier would have an extremely difficult time evading the fate of sinking when confronted with the destructive force of this torpedo.

The video demonstrated the torpedo’s advanced wake homing technology, which enables it to utilize the wake generated by the target vessel to enhance its tracking and targeting capabilities, making it more resilient to jamming. With an estimated range of at least 50km (31 miles) and its deployment on both PLA Navy submarines and surface vessels, the torpedo greatly enhances China’s naval capabilities.

The submarine featured in the recent video is identified as the Type 039B, commonly known as the “Yuan-class.” With 17 of these submarines in active service, they serve as the core of China’s conventional submarine fleet. Equipped with an air-independent power (AIP) system, these submarines can carry out extended missions without relying on atmospheric oxygen.

The sinking exercise of the Type 039B, as depicted in the video, demonstrated its successful integration of airborne data guidance, rapid diving, underwater maneuvering, and effective missile and torpedo strikes. Submarine officer Wen Xuexing acknowledged the historical breakthroughs achieved in sea trials related to torpedo and missile strikes.

The revelation of the Yu-10 torpedo’s capabilities in the celebratory video signifies China’s ongoing progress in naval technology and its commitment to enhancing its submarine force capabilities. Ultimately, this development reinforces China’s strategic position and influence in the global maritime domain.
